לידתה של הקומביה ממזיגה תרבותית ומוזיקלית, שהתרחשה בתקופה הקולוניאלית בחופים הקריביים של קולומביה, בין עבדים שהובאו מאפריקה וספרדים.
הקומביה החלה כריקוד חיזור, שרווח בקרב האוכלוסייה האפריקאית, ומאוחר יותר מזגה לתוכה אלמנטים מוזיקליים וכלי נגינה אירופאים. הקומביה נפוצה מאוד בהרי האנדים ובדרום אמריקה הדרומית, שם היא מאפילה על הפופולריות של הסלסה.(ויקיפדיה).

Después del yugo nos vamos de pachanga
En mi carcacha levanto a mi preciosa
Y derechitos nos vamos al ambiente
A gastar suela y a bailar cumbia sabrosa.

Me fortalezco y me olvido de las penas

Y la rutina es igual, nunca se acaba
Primero es el trabajo y después es el guateque
